Workshop Overview:

Lake Clark has been called "the essence of Alaska", as it combines a variety of landscapes not found together in any of the other Alaska Parks. The park has three separate mountain ranges, two active volcanoes, stretching fertile coastlines, tundra and rainforest, what a variety!  No roads lead to the park and it can only be reached by small aircraft, floatplanes being the best method. The park is one of the least visited in North America. We will be based in an exclusive, centrally located lodge which we will have to ourselves. The bears can quite often be spotted from the deck of the lodge. We will be travelling by foot and ATV’s with carts to our pristine shooting locations. We will be in the presence of experienced guides who will make locating the bears a success. Once at our locations we will be able to see and shoot mother bears with their cubs feeding, foraging and playing about in the tundra surroundings.

Just imagine standing at close range to a 1,100 pound + male brown bear at eye level and taking images, an experience you will not soon forget, and we can do it all day, every day with no concerns about safety or crowds of people. The bears have plenty of Salmon to feed on and are not interested in us as a part of their diet. You will be able to capture images of the bears feeding on fish, digging for razor clams and charging through the shallow waters to chase their prey. A lot of these photo opps will be a close range with frame filling images using 300mm, 400mm and 500mm lenses!

In addition to the bears we will also be making a few side trips to photograph Tufted and Crested Puffins, Bald Eagles as well as a close by rookery where we could see and shoot Kittiwakes and Common Murres. One day trip will also be to a lovely spot called Shelter Creek where we will have the chance to shoot bears in different surroundings with some beautiful “bearscape” possibilities.

Come with Nature’s Photo Adventures to one of the most secluded and breathtaking places on earth to capture images of a lifetime of the Alaskan Brown Bear, the epitome of Alaska.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: arrival in Anchorage. Dinner in Anchorage with group.  Staying overnight in Anchorage.

Day 2:  We will board our bush plane that will transport us from Anchorage to Silver Salmon Creek Lodge. Once landed ATVs will carry you and your gear to the lodge. We should have plenty of time to get out for an afternoon/evening bear photo session .

Day 3:  We will spend the whole day at different locations in and around the lodge photographing brown bears. We will look for different behaviours, settings and backgrounds to maximize our shooting.

Day 4:  We will take a boat ride to an area called Shelter Creek which is in the giant shadow of Iliamna volcano. The scenery here is just stunning and we will have opportunities to photograph the brown bears in different settings with gorgeous backdrops. If fishing is your thing, the creek is awesome for catching dolly varden and salmon. (weather permitting).

Day 5:  More brown bear shooting in and around the lodge. We will have a relaxed pace today as there is no rush since the bears are always there.

Day 6: Today, weather permitting we will take a trip to Duck Island, a rocky outcrop that holds opportunities to shoot Crested and Tufted puffins (should still be around this time of year) Parakeet

Day 7: Today we might opt to go back to Shelter Creek or Duck Island if the weather was not favorable on our previously scheduled days. If we had good success there we will likely photograph the bears in and around the lodge for most of the day.

Day 8: Today is our final morning of shooting. We will shoot in and around the Silver Salmon Creek area to make sure that we have all the images that we hoped to have by now. After a final lunch together the bush plane will take us back to Anchorage.

Days 9,10,11 & 12:

Katmai Park: 3 days of bear photography in and around Katmai including Brooks Falls

During the evenings for those who wish to participate, we will have image review sessions and talk about techniques and what we can expect to see the next day.  In these post processing workshops participants will have ample opportunities to improve skills in Adobe Photoshop.  Participants can learn how to take their images from straight out-of-the-camera RAW images to stunning final works of art.
